Shopify's Fall '26 Edition for CPG brands: an agent-readiness checklist in seven steps
Shopify's twice-yearly Edition is usually a long list of features. This one has a clear thread: getting merchants' products in front of AI agents and letting those agents pay. Here is what a CPG brand on Shopify should switch on, check or ignore.
Shopify bundles its big feature releases into Editions. The Fall '26 Edition, released October 28 under the name "Exponential," has the usual long list: fraud tools, local payment methods, a restyled admin, a rebuilt Sidekick assistant.
Underneath it is a clear direction. A large share of the release is about AI agents: helping them find merchants' products, letting them pay, and giving merchants some control over what agents are told. For a food, beauty or household brand on Shopify, that part deserves an afternoon this week.
This playbook goes through the agent-related features in the order we would tackle them, with what each one does in Shopify's words and what to check. Two days ago we covered the knowledge base in detail, so here it gets a short step and a link.
The release at a glance
Shopify put a handful of numbers in the announcement. They are company figures, but they show the scale of what agents can now reach.
| Item | Figure Shopify gives |
|---|---|
| Products Shop.md can search | More than 1 billion |
| People who trust Shop Pay | More than 400 million |
| Growth in Shop Promise merchant eligibility | 20 times |
| AI agents Shopify connectors work with | 9 |
| High-risk payments Shopify Payments prevents | More than 12,000 a minute |
| Lifetime value of a known vs unknown in-store customer | Over 60% higher |

The nine agents Shopify's connectors work with are ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Duet, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, Grok, Grok Bot, Muse and Perplexity. Those connectors are for merchants running their store from inside an AI chat. The features that decide whether shoppers' agents find your products are different, and they come first.
Step 1: Check Catalog eligibility
What it is. A view in the Shopify admin "that shows whether a store is eligible for Shopify Catalog and links to fixes for anything in the way."
Why it matters for CPG. Shopify says "ChatGPT, Copilot, Meta, Instinct, and other AI agents get product information from Shopify Catalog." If your store is not eligible, those agents are reading your product information some other way, or not at all.
What to do.
- Open the eligibility view and note every issue it lists.
- Fix the ones about product data first: missing prices, missing variant details, missing images or inventory settings.
- Recheck after each fix rather than batching. Some issues hide behind others.
This is the step with the clearest payoff. McKinsey's new survey cites Shopify's figure that AI searches on its structured catalog convert at about twice the rate of scraped data. Being in the catalog is the difference between an agent reading your data and guessing at it.
Step 2: Publish your knowledge base facts
What it is. A page at Sales channels > Agentic where you "review and publish the facts agents get about your store, like return windows, shipping destinations, and gift services." Shopify drafts the facts from your storefront and suggests updates. Nothing it drafts reaches an agent until you approve it.
What to do. Read every drafted fact as if it were printed on your packaging. Check return windows, shipping regions, subscription terms and gifting options against your actual policies. Tip 37 walks through it, and our knowledge base post explains why store-level facts are as sensitive as label copy.
Step 3: Qualify for Shop Promise, now an agent ranking signal
What it is. A free program for eligible US stores that shows badges on qualifying products for trusted delivery and returns, on product pages, at checkout and in the Shop app. Shopify says merchant eligibility has grown 20 times.
The new part. Shopify writes that "badged products can also rank higher in Shop app search and in the Shopify Catalog data shopping agents use." That turns a delivery badge into a ranking signal for agents.
Why it matters for CPG. Food, beauty and household products are often bought on a schedule. Shoppers and agents both care whether the replacement arrives before the old one runs out. A delivery promise is exactly the kind of fact that decides between two similar products.
What to do. Check whether your store is eligible, and if not, which delivery or returns conditions stand in the way. If you fulfill through a 3PL, ask what delivery speed data they pass back to Shopify.
Step 4: Make your variants readable to an agent that may not click
Shop.md, Shop Pay in agents and the Catalog all depend on one thing: an agent correctly picking the product and the variant the shopper wants.
A sandbox study published the same day shows why this needs care. In General Machines' CartTrace-100k, an open-weight shopping agent failed at reading product facts in 37.5% of journeys, and added items to the cart straight from search results without opening a product page in 37.6%. That is one agent in test stores, but the lesson for CPG data is concrete.
Show the data
| Stage | Share of journeys |
|---|---|
| Reading product facts | 37.5% |
| Clarifying the shopper's needs | 28.9% |
| Cart, checkout or payment (each) | 1% |
Source: General Machines, CartTrace-100k: Where Shopping Agents Fail, October 28, 2026. Cart, checkout and payment each failed in under 1% of journeys; shown at 1% as an upper bound. One open-weight agent, 1,044 stand-in stores.
What to do.
- Put size, count, flavor or scent in the product title or variant name, not only in a dropdown label like "Option 2."
- Write the key dietary or skin facts (gluten-free, vegan, fragrance-free, SPF) as text in the description's first lines.
- Use real variant option names: "Flavor: Sea Salt" rather than "Style: A."
- Make sure each variant has its own price, inventory and barcode where you have one.
Step 5: Decide how you feel about Shop.md and Shop Pay in agents
What they are. Shop.md is "a skill that turns any AI agent into a personal shopper." Shoppers point ChatGPT, Claude or another agent to shop.md, and it "can search more than a billion products, check out with Shop Pay, and track orders." Separately, Shop Pay checkout is arriving inside personal agents, starting with Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct.
Why it matters. These are new places a sale can start without a shopper ever visiting your site. Shopify says the buyer stays in control and the card is never shared with the agent.
What to do. There is no switch to flip for Shop.md itself. The work is making sure the products it can find are right, which is steps 1 to 4. Do check your order reports over the next few weeks for orders that came through agents, and make sure your fraud rules do not reject them by mistake. Tip 33 covers how to decide which agents you want to let buy.
Step 6: Clean up pages agents should not read
As agents read more of your store, the pages you never meant to publish matter more. Quiz results, shared carts and bundle builder outputs can confuse an agent the same way they confuse a search engine. Tip 38 covers noindexing them properly.
Step 7: Measure before and after
None of this is worth doing blind. Before you make changes, write down a baseline:
- Twenty shopper questions in your category, asked in ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. Note whether your products appear and whether the facts are right.
- Your Catalog eligibility status and the list of issues.
- Orders from agent channels, if your reports show them.
Repeat the same questions a month later. The answers will move for reasons beyond your control, so look for patterns rather than single results. If you would rather not do it by hand, XENA Intelligence runs shopper questions across AI assistants and shows in SearchPanel where products appear and how they are described.
What to skip for now
Not every agent feature in the release needs action from a CPG brand this month.
- Shopify connectors for AI agents let you manage your store from inside ChatGPT or Claude. Useful for operations, but they do not change what shoppers' agents see.
- Universal Checkout on Shop combines carts from multiple merchants in the Shop app. It needs nothing from you beyond normal checkout settings.
- Shop.com, Shop's new web home, is worth a look to see how your products appear, but there is no setup step.
Why this matters more for CPG than most
McKinsey's agentic commerce survey, also out October 28, found grocery had the second-highest share of AI users completing a purchase with AI, after apparel, and named grocery and beauty as categories catching up fast. These are repeat-purchase categories with many near-identical variants, exactly where an agent is most likely to pick the wrong flavor or size.
Shopify has now given merchants the tools to see whether agents can read their catalog and to control what agents are told about the store. The brands that use them first will be the ones agents get right.
Questions
What is Shopify Catalog eligibility?
It is a view in the Shopify admin, added in the Fall '26 Edition, that shows whether a store is eligible for Shopify Catalog and links to fixes for anything in the way. Shopify says AI agents including ChatGPT, Copilot, Meta and Instinct get product information from Shopify Catalog.
What is Shop.md?
Shop.md is a shopping skill from Shopify. Shoppers point ChatGPT, Claude or another AI agent to shop.md, and the agent can search more than a billion products, check out with Shop Pay and track orders, using the shopper's preferences and order history from Shop.
Does Shop Promise affect AI agents?
Shopify says badged products can rank higher in Shop app search and in the Shopify Catalog data that shopping agents use. Shop Promise is a free program for eligible US stores that shows delivery and returns badges on qualifying products.
Which AI agents support Shop Pay?
Shopify says Shop Pay checkout is coming inside personal AI agents starting with Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct, and that Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct also offer Shop Pay for brands not on Shopify.

Shopify now drafts what AI agents hear about your store. Treat it like label copy, not a settings page.
On October 26 Shopify moved its knowledge base into the admin and started drafting store facts for AI agents from your own pages. It will look like one more settings screen. For a food, beauty or household brand, it is closer to the back of the box.
