Google's AI checkout reaches Canada: what US consumer brands selling north should check
Three weeks after US shoppers got it, Google's agent checkout started rolling out in Canada with lululemon, Shoppers Drug Mart, Simons and select Shopify merchants. If your brand sells to Canadian customers, here is what changed, what Shopify's settings do, and what will not show up in your analytics.
Google's agent checkout crossed its first border today. In a post on the Google Canada blog, Sabrina Geremia, who leads Google Canada, announced that direct checkout powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is "rolling out starting today" to Canadian shoppers in AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app.
Most of our readers are US consumer brands, so why does this matter? Because many of you ship to Canada, and many of you sell on Shopify, which co-developed UCP with Google and is one of the launch partners. If you're eligible, your products may already be buyable inside a Canadian shopper's Gemini conversation. This guide covers what launched, what Shopify's settings do, and what to check this week.
What launched, in one table
| Item | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Start date | Rolling out from November 4, 2026 | Google Canada |
| Where | AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app | Google Canada |
| Launch retailers | lululemon, select Shopify merchants, Shoppers Drug Mart, Simons | Google Canada |
| US launch, for comparison | October 15, 2026 | CBC |
| Payment | Google Pay, with payment and shipping details saved in Google Wallet | Google Canada |
| Seller of record | The retailer, not Google | Google Canada, CBC |
| Broader retailer access | Simplified UCP integration in Merchant Center, starting next year | Google Canada |
| Coming later | Loyalty rewards and other capabilities "in the coming months" | Google Canada |
| Cost to retailers | Free, according to Google Canada's head of retail | CBC |

When we looked at AI shopping assistants outside the US on October 27, Google's Merchant Center documentation said Canada and Australia would follow the US "next year" for its UCP setup hub. Today's launch doesn't contradict that: the retailer-facing setup inside Merchant Center is still slated for next year. What arrived early is the shopper-facing checkout, through a small set of partners, including Shopify.
How big is the audience?
Google's case rests on its own research: "59% of holiday shoppers in Canada plan to use an AI tool to help them shop this season," Geremia wrote. CBC put that number next to two outside estimates, and they are a lot lower.
Show the data
| Source of estimate | Value |
|---|---|
| Google Canada | 59% |
| Deloitte | 39% |
| PwC | 28% |
Source: CBC News (Nov 4, 2026), citing Google Canada, Deloitte and PwC. Survey questions and samples differ; Google's figure is for holiday shoppers who plan to use an AI tool. Treat the range, not any single number, as the takeaway.
Even the low end is a large group of shoppers asking an assistant for help this season. The range also tells you something: definitions matter, and the vendor with something to sell has the highest number.
If you sell on Shopify: what the settings do
Shopify's help page, Selling on Google AI Mode and Gemini, is the practical reference. The key points:
Eligibility
- You must sell to customers in the United States, Canada or Australia. Your store can be based in any country.
- You need a valid Google Merchant Center account that meets Google's requirements, and your products must be in Merchant Center, through the Google & YouTube channel, a feed provider or manual upload.
- Your products must be eligible for Shopify Catalog, you must accept Shopify's Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms, and your terms of service, privacy policy and return policy must be filled in.
Defaults
Direct checkout is on by default for eligible stores. If you turn it off, shoppers can still discover your products in AI Mode and Gemini but are sent to your online store to buy. The setting lives under Sales channels > Agentic: turn off "Allow Shopify to manage for me," choose Google AI Mode and Gemini, and switch direct checkout on or off. The same panel controls Meta's Muse, which Shopify says now offers Shop Pay as well.
What isn't supported
- Products sold only as subscriptions (a product with both options can be bought once, but not subscribed to), product bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products.
- Local delivery, store pickup and pickup points.
- Requiring customers to sign in before checkout.
- Some checkout blocks, such as upsells, custom fields, loyalty experiences, trust badges and consent collection, may not display.
Automatic discounts and discount codes are supported, and Shopify Functions for shipping, discounts and validation run. Shopify says there are no fees beyond standard payment processing. One more detail worth acting on: Shopify asks merchants to make sure relevant legal disclosures appear in the first 6,000 characters of the product description.
The measurement gap
This is the line in Shopify's documentation most brands will miss: "Google Analytics and custom pixels won't fire in Google AI Mode and Gemini's direct checkout." Only server-to-server checkout started and completed events fire.
So if a Canadian shopper buys your product inside Gemini, your GA4 property won't see a session, a product view or a purchase from that journey. The order will appear in Shopify admin. That means:
- Reconcile Shopify orders by channel against GA4 revenue each week. A growing gap from the Agentic channel is the signal.
- Don't judge AI shopping by GA4 alone. We explained the same problem for referral traffic in our GA4 guide, and today's ChatGPT traffic analysis shows how little of AI's influence shows up as visits.
- If you rely on a checkout block for something legally or operationally important, test whether it appears in the direct checkout, because Shopify says it may not.
What to check this week, in order
- Confirm whether you're eligible. Check your Merchant Center account status and whether Canada is in your Shopify markets and shipping zones.
- Decide on the default. Direct checkout is on unless you turn it off. If your margins, pricing or bundles make in-chat checkout a bad fit for Canada, change it deliberately rather than by accident.
- Check Canadian prices, duties and shipping. An agent will show a Canadian shopper a total. Make sure your Canada pricing and shipping in Merchant Center match your store, since Shopify's help page stresses keeping product data and policies in sync.
- Review your hero products' first 6,000 characters. Legal disclosures belong there. For food, supplements and personal care, check that bilingual or Canada-specific labeling information you rely on elsewhere is reflected where needed.
- Look at your return policy. Retailers are the seller of record, so returns from agent orders are yours to handle, and the policy is part of eligibility.
- Set up the reconciliation report. Shopify orders by channel, weekly, next to GA4.
The concerns worth keeping in view
CBC's report included voices that brands should hear. Vass Bednar of the Canadian SHIELD Institute warned that "choice is more constrained than on the open web" in AI shopping, and that offers may reflect advertising relationships. David Soberman of the University of Toronto's Rotman School said the combination of search and agents has made retailers "sort of passive players." CBC also reported that some of Canada's largest banks announced plans last week to block third-party AI agents from accessing clients' online bank accounts, citing security.
None of that stops the rollout. It does suggest the agent channel in Canada will be watched closely, and that the brands who do well will be the ones whose product facts are accurate when the agent reads them. Today's data piece on Shopify catalog picks shows how much the catalog record drives what an agent chooses.
Where this fits
The US got direct checkout in October, Canada today, and Shopify's help page already lists Australia among eligible customer markets. The direction is clear: agent checkout is becoming a standard feature of Google's shopping surfaces in English-speaking markets, with Merchant Center setup opening it to more retailers next year.
For a US brand, Canada is a useful early test because it's small enough to watch closely. If you want help seeing how your products are described across assistants on either side of the border, XENA Intelligence tracks that for consumer brands, and its SearchPanel product looks at individual listings. Either way, start with the settings page and the reconciliation report. Those two will tell you most of what you need to know by Black Friday.
Questions
When did Google's AI checkout launch in Canada?
Google announced on November 4, 2026 that direct checkout powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol is rolling out starting that day to Canadian shoppers in AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app.
Which retailers support Google's AI checkout in Canada?
At launch Google named lululemon, select Shopify merchants, Shoppers Drug Mart and Simons. CBC reported that more are expected in the new year, and Google says simplified UCP integration in Merchant Center will start next year.
Can a US Shopify store sell through Google AI Mode checkout to Canadians?
Shopify's help page says stores must sell to customers in the United States, Canada or Australia and can be based in any country, with a valid Merchant Center account and Shopify Catalog-eligible products. Direct checkout is rolling out gradually, so not every eligible store or shopper has it yet.
Will Google Analytics track sales from Google's AI checkout?
Not through standard tags. Shopify says Google Analytics and custom pixels won't fire in Google AI Mode and Gemini's direct checkout; only server-to-server checkout started and completed events fire. Orders still appear in Shopify admin.

Selling outside the US? A guide to where AI shopping assistants actually work for CPG brands
Almost every AI shopping launch this year came with the same line in the fine print: US only. If your brand also sells in Toronto, Stockholm or Seoul, the to-do list looks different, and in a few places a local player got there first.
Google's Universal Cart keeps the save. Stop treating add-to-cart as your signal
Google now holds the moment a shopper says 'maybe'. Brands can complain about losing the abandoned-cart email, or accept that the save was never really theirs and work on the parts Google can't fake: price, stock and a product worth keeping.
