Ads in Google AI Mode: a checklist for CPG brands running Shopping, Performance Max and AI Max

Google is testing ads inside AI Mode answers, including for shoppers who connected Gmail and Photos. You can't target the placement or see a report for it. Here is what a food, beverage or personal care brand can actually set up and check.

is thisgluten free?

Every week or so, a founder asks us some version of "how do we get into AI Mode ads?" The short answer is that you probably already are, or could be, without changing anything. The longer answer is that you can't choose the placement, can't see it in a report, and as of October 27, can't see when the ad was shaped by what's in the shopper's inbox. That makes this less a media-buying question and more a housekeeping one.

This playbook is for brands that already run Google Shopping or Performance Max, which is most DTC food, beverage, beauty and household brands. It's a checklist, in the order we'd work through it.

What we know about AI Mode ads

Three pieces of reporting give the current picture.

Search Engine Land's October 9 explainer by Leigh Buttrey lays out the plumbing. There's no separate AI Mode campaign in Google Ads, and AI Max doesn't let you select AI Mode placements. Google's eligible campaigns for its AI Mode ad tests are Performance Max, Shopping, and Search campaigns using broad match, including AI Max for Search. At Google Marketing Live 2026, Google recommended AI Max for Search, AI Max for Shopping (a beta) and Performance Max for its newer AI formats.

Search Engine Journal reported on October 27 that Google has started testing AI Mode ads for users who switched on Personal Intelligence, after a privacy policy change effective October 16 that lets connected Gmail, Photos and Drive content shape personalized ads for those users. There are no new advertiser controls, targeting options or reporting for it.

And SE Ranking's July study measured how often ads appear. It checked 50,032 US commercial keywords across 20 niches, chosen to trigger text ads rather than product carousels, and found a text ad on 14,733 of them, 29.45%.

What the SE Ranking data says about where ads land

The most useful finding for budgeting is that cost per click predicted ad presence better than anything else SE Ranking measured.

Niche mattered more than anything. Pets returned an ad on 72.38% of keywords and Healthcare on 2.64%. For CPG, the advertiser counts by niche are worth a look, because they show how crowded each category's AI Mode ad slots are.

Read that table carefully. In Pets, a few dozen advertisers win the same slots over and over. In Fashion and Beauty, more advertisers each show up less often. SE Ranking warns that these advertiser-level numbers are the most sensitive to keyword choice in the whole study, so treat them as a sketch of market structure, not a forecast for your account.

Ads didn't buy citations

The finding we'd put on the wall is this one.

Paid and organic AI Mode visibility are separate contests. An ad gets you a labeled slot next to the answer. It doesn't get your page into the answer. That's why the second half of this checklist is about pages, not bids.

The checklist

1. Confirm which of your campaigns are eligible

Open your account and list every campaign by type. Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible as they are. Search campaigns are eligible if they use broad match or AI Max. SEL notes a small Google experiment that lets exact and phrase match serve text ads in AI Mode for clear, direct intent, but we'd treat that as a test, not a plan. If everything you run is exact-match Search, you're mostly out.

2. Fix the feed before anything else

Shopping and Performance Max ads are built from your Merchant Center feed. In a conversational answer, the feed is also what Google matches to a long, specific question. Titles that say "Original 12 oz" with no flavor, size or diet attribute are a handicap. Fill in the attributes you can, including the newer conversational ones; our post on Merchant Center's conversational attributes and the Merchant Center tip cover what to add.

3. Make the landing page say what the product is for

AI Max's text customization can generate ad assets from your domain, landing pages, existing ads and keywords, and Final URL Expansion can pick a different destination page. Whatever's on the page becomes raw material. A product page that states size, ingredients, claims and who it's for gives Google accurate words to work with. A page of mood photography and one slogan gives it very little. For CPG, check the claims especially: anything Google writes from your page should be something your regulatory team would sign off on.

4. Set AI Max controls on purpose

SEL lists the controls: brand controls, locations of interest, URL inclusions and exclusions, and settings for search term matching, text customization and Final URL Expansion. Don't leave them at defaults. Exclude pages that make poor landing pages for new customers, like your wholesale page, the careers page or an old recipe blog. If a message must appear, note that Google's AI Max FAQ, as SEL reports, says pinning isn't respected with some asset optimization and URL inclusion settings.

5. Decide which products can carry an offer

Direct Offers lets retailers supply eligible promotions in campaign settings and lets Google decide when to show them in AI Mode. That's a margin decision dressed up as a marketing feature. Before you opt in, mark which SKUs can absorb a discount (overstock, a new flavor you want trialed) and which can't (the hero product that already sells at full price). Leave the rest out.

6. Accept that Personal Intelligence is invisible to you

You can't target, segment, bid on or report on Gmail and Photos signals. Advertisers never see the inbox, and sensitive categories (Google lists race, religion, sexual orientation and health) are excluded from personalized ads. For a supplement or wellness brand, that health exclusion matters: don't expect personal context to help you there. The only practical response is the same as for any shopper: a feed and page that make the product's fit obvious. Our think piece on personalized answers goes into why.

7. Don't credit AI Mode for changes you can't isolate

AI Max reporting shows expanded matches, headlines, landing pages and asset performance, but not AI Mode performance specifically. If results move after you switch on AI Max, the cause could be broader matching, new creative, a different landing page or the new placement. Write down what you changed and when. The ChatGPT ad-rewrite tip has the same lesson for a different platform: know which words are yours.

8. Measure incrementality, not just ROAS

More conversions might be new customers, or they might be people who would have bought anyway. If you have the scale, run a geo or holdout test before and after enabling AI Max. If you don't, at least compare new-customer rate and margin, not only conversion count. Pair it with the GA4 setup for AI traffic so organic AI referrals don't get mixed into paid.

9. Work the organic side in parallel

Given SE Ranking's 88% figure, the paid slot and the cited answer are different things. Check what AI Mode says about your products without an ad: which brands it names, what facts it gives, which pages it cites. Do it by hand for a short list of questions, or with a tool. XENA Intelligence asks assistants including Gemini and ChatGPT shopper-style questions and scores how products show up. Its SearchPanel view puts the actual answers next to a per-SKU score, which makes it easier to see whether a product is missing or just described badly. Either way, fix the wrong facts on your own pages first.

What we'd skip for now

We wouldn't restructure an account just for AI Mode. The formats are tests and pilots, availability differs by market, and the reporting isn't there yet. We also wouldn't move budget into broad match only to chase the placement if your exact-match campaigns are profitable. The safer move is to make the things AI Mode draws on, the feed and the pages, good enough that whichever format wins, your product is described correctly.

Where this is heading

Google is clearly building toward ads that sit inside recommendations rather than beside them, with creative it writes itself. For a CPG brand, that shifts work from writing ad copy to maintaining source material: product data, claims, offers and pages. It's less glamorous than a new campaign type, but it's the part you actually control.

Questions

How do you get ads into Google AI Mode?

Through existing campaigns. Google has named Performance Max, Shopping, and Search campaigns using broad match, including AI Max for Search, as eligible. There's no AI Mode campaign type or placement setting.

How often does AI Mode show ads?

SE Ranking's July 2026 study found text ads in 29.45% of AI Mode responses across 50,032 US commercial keywords, excluding product carousels. Ad presence ranged from 72.38% in Pets to 2.64% in Healthcare.

Can advertisers target Gmail data in AI Mode ads?

No. Google is testing AI Mode ads for users who connect apps through Personal Intelligence, and connected-app context may influence which ads they see, but advertisers get no inbox access, no targeting option and no dedicated reporting.

Does running ads in AI Mode get your site cited in the answer?

Not in SE Ranking's data. In 88% of keywords with ads, the advertiser's domain was not among the sources AI Mode cited, and the study found no citation advantage from advertising after controlling for brand strength.
