What does Shopify's catalog tell an AI agent about your product, and does it match your own page?
An afternoon All assistants
Short answer
Search your top shopper phrases through Shop MCP, Shopify's free connection for agents, and compare the rating, review count, summary and features it returns with your product page. Fix anything that disagrees at the source, because the agent's model reasons from the catalog's version.
Shopify opened Shop MCP on October 13, and searching its catalog needs no API key, so any agent builder can pull your listing. In a test published November 2, Slobodan Manic gave three Claude models the products Shop MCP returned and watched what they cited. Two of them often picked the product with the most reviews and quoted the count, including a water bottle the catalog listed at 447,221 reviews while the brand's own page showed 6,537. The models could not check the number; they repeated it. Your catalog record is now copy that agents read aloud, so it is worth ten minutes a month to see it the way they do.
Do this
- Pick the three phrases shoppers most often use for your category, such as "mineral sunscreen SPF 50" or "protein bar low sugar".
- Run each phrase through Shop MCP search, or through Shopify's shop command-line tool, which calls the same server, and save the results.
- For each of your products that appears, write down the title, price, rating, review count, one-line summary and the first features listed.
- Open your own product page next to it and mark every number, claim or variant name that differs.
- Fix the source in Shopify: titles, descriptions and product attributes. If the review count differs, ask your reviews app which count it shares and whether it merges variants.
- Repeat once a month and after any change to your reviews app, theme or product structure.
