ChatGPT now ranks sellers partly on who makes the product. A guide for CPG brands with resellers.
When a shopper taps a product in ChatGPT, a list of places to buy it appears. OpenAI has now said in plain words how that list is ordered, and one of the factors is new to most brand teams: whether the seller is the company that makes the item.
OpenAI rewrote its help page on shopping in ChatGPT this week. Most of the update is for shoppers: virtual try-on, saving products to a library, how prices are shown. One paragraph is for merchants, and it is the clearest statement OpenAI has made about who gets listed first when a shopper is ready to buy.
From OpenAI's help page:
Merchants are ranked based on factors like availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller of that item.
For a packaged goods brand, the last factor is the interesting one. Most CPG products are sold by many merchants: Amazon, Walmart, Target, grocers, pharmacies, third-party resellers and sometimes the brand itself. ChatGPT now says that being the maker or primary seller counts. This guide covers what that means and what to do about it.
How a ChatGPT shopping answer is built
The page describes two separate lists, and it helps to keep them apart.
The product list. When a question has shopping intent, ChatGPT shows a carousel of products. OpenAI says a product appears when ChatGPT perceives it as relevant to the shopper's intent, using the question and context such as Memory or custom instructions. It draws on structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers, such as price and product description, other third-party content, the model's own knowledge and OpenAI's policies. OpenAI states that these results are selected independently and are not ads.
The merchant list. When a shopper taps a product, ChatGPT may show the merchants that offer it. This is the list ranked on availability, price, quality and maker or primary seller status. It is built from merchant and product metadata from third-party providers or directly from merchants.
Table: The two lists in a ChatGPT shopping answer, as OpenAI describes them
| List | When it appears | What OpenAI says drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Product carousel | When the question suggests shopping intent | Relevance to intent and context; structured metadata such as price and description; third-party content; model knowledge; safety policies |
| Merchant list | After a shopper selects a product | Availability, price, quality, maker or primary seller status; metadata from providers or merchants |
| Best price label | When more than one merchant offers the product | The lowest priced option ChatGPT is aware of |
Two details on pricing matter for brands. OpenAI says the price in the first answer typically reflects the first merchant listed, which may not be the lowest. And there can be a delay before price or shipping changes show up.
There is also a note on product names. OpenAI says ChatGPT may generate simplified product titles and descriptions, because merchants often use different titles for the same product. It may add labels such as Budget-friendly or Most popular, generated from information available to the model, including third-party data and review summaries. In other words, the words a shopper sees next to your product may not be your words. The cleaner and more consistent your own titles are across merchants, the less ChatGPT has to reconcile, and the more likely its simplified version matches what is on the package.
What "maker or primary seller" changes
Before this, a reasonable assumption was that the merchant list behaved like a price comparison: cheapest in-stock offer first. Price is still a factor. But OpenAI now names the relationship between the seller and the product as a factor too.
We do not know how much weight it carries, and OpenAI does not say. It also writes "factors like", so the list is not complete, and says it expects rankings to become more personalized. Anyone who claims to know the formula is guessing.
What we can say is that the factor rewards something a brand controls: making it obvious that a given listing is the manufacturer's own, or the main authorized source. That has three practical consequences.
- Your own site becomes a candidate, if it is a merchant. A brand that sells direct, even a limited range, can appear as the maker in the merchant list. A brand whose site has no buy option is not a merchant there.
- Resellers with poor data may slip. A third-party seller with stale stock or a vague product title is now competing against the maker on a stated factor, not just price.
- Identity has to be machine-readable. ChatGPT can only rank you as the maker if the metadata it receives says so consistently.
How to make ChatGPT see you as the maker
None of these steps depend on knowing the ranking formula. They make your claim to be the maker easy to read.
1. Use the same brand name and product identifiers everywhere
Make the brand field, product name and GTIN or UPC identical across your site, your Shopify catalog or feed, Amazon, Walmart and other retailers. Our tip on consistency, (tip:5), explains why mismatches cause problems. If the same product has three names across three feeds, ChatGPT has to guess that they are one item.
2. Mark up your product pages
Product structured data on your own pages should state the brand, the manufacturer where relevant, the GTIN, price, availability and the offer's seller. Tip (tip:2) covers the basic schema for a CPG product page. Make sure the price and availability in the markup match what the page shows.
3. Pick the feed path that fits how you sell
OpenAI says Shopify merchants are already integrated through Shopify Catalog, with no additional work. If you sell direct on another platform, OpenAI points to its Product Feed documentation and an application for direct feed access on its developer site. We covered what brands learned from early feeds in (post:chatgpt-shopping-feed-lessons) and the basics in (tip:32).
4. Keep price and stock current
Availability is the first factor OpenAI lists. An out-of-stock maker listing is unlikely to help you. If your direct store runs out of a popular size, make sure the feed says so, so ChatGPT can send the shopper to a retailer that has it instead of a dead end.
5. Tell your retail partners
If you do not sell direct, your best outcome is that the shopper is sent to a strong retailer listing. Make sure the retailers you rely on carry complete, current data for your products. A Walmart or Target listing with the right pack size and price is the next best thing to your own.
6. Check the merchant list for your top products
Ask ChatGPT about your ten best sellers, tap through to the merchant list and record who appears and in what order. Note any unauthorized resellers, wrong prices or missing sizes. Repeat monthly. Some teams automate this kind of check with tools such as SearchPanel from XENA Intelligence; a spreadsheet works for a short list.
What about ads?
OpenAI is clear that product results are not ads and are not influenced by partnerships. Ads exist in ChatGPT, but separately. Search Engine Watch reported on October 29 that OpenAI's new visual ad format, with an Ad label, had started showing inside ChatGPT chats in a limited US test.
That separation is worth watching. Elsewhere in the industry, paid placement is moving closer to what agents recommend, as we discuss in (post:shopify-promoted-placements-agent-commission). For now, OpenAI's stated position is that the organic product and merchant lists are driven by relevance and merchant data, not payment. That makes clean data the main lever a brand has in this part of ChatGPT.
A quick checklist
Table: Maker-signal checklist for a CPG brand in ChatGPT shopping
| Check | Where | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Brand name identical across channels | Site, feed, Amazon, Walmart, Target | One spelling everywhere |
| GTIN or UPC on every variant | Site markup and feeds | Every size and count has its own identifier |
| Product markup with brand, price, availability | Your product pages | Markup matches visible page |
| Feed path chosen | Shopify Catalog or OpenAI direct feed | Products appear with correct data |
| Stock and price kept current | Feed and site | No out-of-stock items shown as available |
| Merchant list reviewed | ChatGPT, top 10 products | Order and sellers recorded monthly |
What this guide does not cover
This is about the merchant list in ChatGPT's own shopping results. It does not tell you how ChatGPT decides which products to show in the first place, beyond what OpenAI describes, and it does not cover the separate rules for ads or for agentic checkout inside ChatGPT. OpenAI's developer documentation lists different requirements for product data used in ads and in checkout. If you plan to use either, read those requirements directly rather than assuming the merchant list rules carry over.
It also does not mean you should cut resellers out. Many CPG brands depend on large retailers and authorized distributors, and shoppers often prefer to buy where they already have an account. The aim is not to push every shopper to your own store. It is to make sure the list ChatGPT shows is accurate, with your products correctly identified, in stock and priced as you expect, wherever the shopper ends up buying.
The bottom line
OpenAI has given brands a rare piece of clarity: in the merchant list, being the maker counts. It is one factor among several, and the weighting is unknown. But it is a factor that rewards ordinary, well-run product data, and it is one area where the brand starts with an advantage over every reseller, as long as the machines can tell who the brand is.
Questions
How does ChatGPT rank the merchants that sell a product?
OpenAI says merchants are ranked based on factors like availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller of that item. The list is built from merchant and product metadata from third-party providers or from merchants directly, and OpenAI expects to personalize rankings more over time.
Are ChatGPT shopping results ads?
No, according to OpenAI. Its help page says product results are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships. Ads are shown separately.
How do I get my products into ChatGPT shopping?
If you sell on Shopify, OpenAI says your product data is already integrated through Shopify Catalog with no extra work. Other merchants can read OpenAI's Product Feed documentation and apply for direct feed access.
What does the Best price label in ChatGPT mean?
When more than one merchant offers a product, ChatGPT may put a Best price label on the lowest priced option it is aware of. OpenAI notes that the price in the first answer usually reflects the first merchant listed, which may not be the lowest.
